The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
